This first-class compilation provides a comprehensive overview of female folk artists and songwriters from 1966-1973.The 44-page booklet is filled with rare photographs and information about each artist. The listener will encounter psychedelia from San Francisco, folk-rock from L.A., folk-pop from "swinging London," electric folk, progressive folk, and a host of female singer-songwriters. This makes "Milk Of The Tree" not only a fascinating social testament to the era, but also an entertaining portrait of a special time and mindset that produced compelling and enduring music. In addition to well-known performers from both sides of the Atlantic, Milk Of The Tree includes many artists who were lesser known at the time but now enjoy cult status among collectors. Many of the tracks remained unreleased at the time and the set also includes the first ever performances by pioneering female rock duo Emily Muff, two Americans living in England at the time but unable to get a record deal. Spanning four hours and containing sixty tracks, Milk Of The Tree focuses on the music of female soloists and groups with female singers in the late 1960s and early 1970s in the UK and North America. It was not until the mid-1960s that independent female singers began to make their mark in the music industry. The women's movement coincided with the first signs of real musical emancipation. In North America, Joan Baez and Buffy Sainte-Marie performed in folk clubs, coffee houses and on college campuses, inspiring a generation of female singers and musicians with their strong, independent thinking and social sensibility. In Britain, a combination of folk revival and Beatles-influenced pop emerged with Marianne Faithfull, Dana Gillespie and Vashti Bunyan. After a few years, psychedelia and folk rock emerged, led by Pentangle and (in the US) the Stone Poneys, fronted by Linda Ronstadt, who first stormed the clubs and then the charts. Jackie DeShannon's 1968 album Laurel Canyon turned music industry employees into fans who joined the die-hard "folkies". The new movement of female singer-songwriters reached its peak in 1971 with the release of groundbreaking albums like Joni Mitchell's Blue and Carole King's Tapestry. The last years of the 1970s also saw the blurring of boundaries in British music: rock bands were attracted to rural folk and traditional folk performers flirted with the underground. Folk clubs became 'arts laboratories' and heavy rock bands, folk-rock groups and acoustic songwriters emerged in the environs of colleges and universities. Suddenly the scene was flooded with female singers who wanted to become the British equivalent of Joni Mitchell.
