Mushroom Records was founded in 1970 in London by producer Vic Keary, a seasoned music industry veteran who had worked for Maximum Sound Productions for most of the 1960s. Within three years, Mushroom had released a dizzying array of recordings ranging from prog rock (Second Hand, Chillum), singer-songwriters (Simon Finn, Andreas Thomopoulos), traditional folk (Callinan-Flynn, The Liverpool Fishermen), Indian music (Pandit Kanwar Sain Trikha, Nitai Dasgupta), avant-garde jazz (Lol Coxhill) and world music (Les Flambeaux). On the album Magic Carpet, Mushroom recorded a band that covered most of the above genres on one album. Spaced Out is the first compilation ever to tell the story of Mushroom's beginnings in the psychedelic era and the band's evolution in the 1970s. With a foreword by label boss Vic Keary, this double CD shows how Mushroom embodied the excitement and diversity of the progressive era. CD 1 offers a cross-section of Mushroom's multi-layered recordings, while the second CD returns to Mushroom's prehistory with an extensive mix of Maximum Productions material. Featuring songs from Tuesday's Children, The Attraction, Second Hand, Felius Andromeda and Denis Couldry, Mel Turner, femme pop rarities (Angelina, The New Faces, The Carolines) and curiosities like Andromeda, the album is a perfect tribute to the iconic British label. The cover art is by renowned designer Phil Smee, whose impressive collection of graphics for Mushroom Records is featured in the booklet. Notes by David Wells (Grapefruit) tell the story of this previously undocumented chapter of the underground scene.
