Max Koch

Max Koch is a guitarist and improviser based in germany. His music disorganizes formalisms and breaks them down into a state of temporally ordered restlessness. After beeing influenced by blues- and soul music, doing first escapades in punk and doom metal bands around the area of his hometown Aschaffenburg, he involuntarily discovered the possibility of improvisational expression with his guitar. Around this time, he began studying music, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in 2019. Then he has moved to Cologne and continued his studies at the Folkwang Universität der Künste in Essen. Since that time he has been working in different styles of contemporary music, from complete free improvised solo concerts to the collectively organized jazz-orchestra "Federal Penguin Summit", with whom a live CD was released in 2019. In January 2023, his debut album "Ten Bulls" was released by Jazzwerkstatt. Currently, Max Koch is a active part in the german improvisation scene and seeks, by making visible progressive factors in folk music traditions, new narratives for contemporary improvisational music. Besides guitar he also plays various prepared string instruments and banjo.
