Innovative American Flutist and Composer

Nicole Mitchell is an American flutist, composer, bandleader, and educator. She is known for her work in the fields of contemporary jazz and avant-garde music. Mitchell has been a prominent figure in the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), a historically significant organization that has fostered many innovative jazz musicians since its inception in Chicago in the 1960s. As an artist, she has been recognized for her technical virtuosity on the flute as well as her unique compositional style that often incorporates elements of African rhythms, contemporary classical music, and poetry.
